There is a reason why you seemingly haven't been able to have the things you wanted and why you were beaten back to having to hide what you wanted and want smaller things. The reason is described by John 10:10:
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
There is an enemy, and he is a th...ief who wants to destroy you, steal your soul, and kill you.
From the beginning he would have torn you from the womb if he could have. Failing that, he would have dashed you against the rocks in your helpless infancy. Failing that, how about a childhood disease? A teenage accident? How many close calls were there when you were growing up? Who do you think it was who spared you?
But some of the attacks are allowed. We know they are, as there have been 54 million abortions just in America. God didn't stay the enemy's hand with those babies. He doesn't always. I happen to know one of the attacks that succeeded was against your first and favorite childhood dream. What that teacher said, that guy in school, that parent, that peer--devastated you, stole your dreams, made you become someone else, which was like a death, wasn't it?
Eventually you will die, as we all do. Do you realize that the reason you didn't die sooner, and the reason you are allowed to have anything here, any pleasure at all, is because the Lord stays the enemy's hand? How much of your time have you spent pursuing the pleasures of this world vs. how much of it you have spent pursuing the Author of Life? If you are like most of us, the answer is far in favor of worldly pleasures. And yet He still spared you from the enemy. Why?

Don't let your heart break over all of the mistakes you made, the people you hurt, and the things you weren't able to have. Instead rejoice, for you have been spared by a loving merciful God. Give thanks and seek Him for wisdom as to why you were spared. I'm certain it wasn't so you could feel guilty, or so you could punish yourself, or so you could have the things you couldn't have before.
